First Book puppet
This huge puppet was at the Cooper-Young Festival. I'm not sure what it has to do with First Book, but I asked the people around it about First Book, and it sounds like a wonderful organization. They give children who don't have books their very first very own book, and they make sure the book is tailored to the child.

Earring Bingo
Astrid French of Yellow Wood Wares created the jewelry, and I think she made the "lantern," too. Her booth at the Cooper-Young Festival was unique, with a backdrop of old board game boards put together like a curtain. The only one I recognized was "Go to the Head of the Class," but I'm sure the others were contemporary (late 1950s, early 1960s).

Glass Garden Mushrooms
Cat Snyder, who goes by the name "Dumpster Diva" (you should see her card), made these marvelous mushrooms out of old glass bottles and rebar and was selling them at the Cooper-Young Festival. I wish I had a yard for them!

Bank on Scale
During the Cooper-Young Festival, I walked by a house behind the Festival where the owner was selling a number of objects, including these. He swore the bank worked, but I have my doubts. He told me the scale belonged to his father, who used to work at the Commercial Appeal and got it from the old Commercial Appeal building on Union (remember? I do!). It didn't have the weights with it, though, so I didn't buy it.

Biker Party (sort of!)
Across the street from the First Congo parking lot during the Cooper-Young Festival, people who appeared to be dedicated bicyclists were having a party. It reminded me so much of certain parties I'd been to in college that I had to take a picture, but I have no idea who any of these people are. Can anyone identify them? They looked like they were having a very good time!

Amurica Photo Booth
Jamie Harmon's crazy little trailer was at the Cooper-Young Festival. It really is a photo booth -- I know, because he kept yelling, "Have your photo taken in my photo booth!" If you search for the Amurica trailer online, you will find his website as well as interesting articles about him that show the inside of the trailer.

Amurica trailer with owner
As you can see, Jamie Harmon can't stand up in his own trailer, which he brought to the Cooper-Young Festival. If you search for the Amurica trailer online, you will find his website as well as interesting articles about him that show the inside of the trailer.

African Dance Lesson 1
During the Cooper-Young Festival, a professional dance troupe offered a free dance lesson inside the First Congo sanctuary. The young man in yellow is the teacher; I think the best-dressed people are members of the troupe. Does anyone know the name of these dancers?

African Dance Lesson 2
During the Cooper-Young Festival, a professional dance troupe offered a free dance lesson inside the First Congo sanctuary. As you can see, some people really got into it! Does anyone know the name of the troupe?

African Dance Lesson - Band
During the Cooper-Young Festival, a professional dance troupe whose name I didn't get (does anyone know?) gave a free dance lesson inside the First Congo sanctuary. The band was terrific!
